From A Forgotten Team Member, How This South American Has Turned It Around At Manchester United

valencia
When Antonio Valencia signed for Manchester United in 2009, there was a unanimous feeling of disappointment surrounding his transfer among the club’s supporters, given he was expected to replace the departed Cristiano Ronaldo and wasn’t the big money signing many would have craved to see.
That was quickly put to bed when he established a formidable partnership with Wayne Rooney, creating over 80 chances in all competitions and providing seven assists. Such was his meteoric rise at Old Trafford that he was awarded the prestigious Number 7 shirt for his displays post the 2011-12 season, having been voted the club’s Player of the Year.
The following season proved to be the exact opposite of the previous three years. Despite being acknowledged as an important member of United’s title-winning campaign, Valencia’s form took a major dip and his decision to revert to his original shirt number 25 was indicative of the pressure he was forced to deal with in that iconic jersey. He showed flashes of his pacey best under David Moyes thereafter but never really returned to the heights he scaled under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The appointment of Louis van Gaal sprung a host of tactical and positional changes at Manchester United, one of which was the permanent integration of Valencia into a right-back role. Incidentally, that is where the South American began playing in the formative stages of his career, his transition to an offensive role materializing over the years to follow. In spite of having been shoehorned into that position before, there was plenty of discontent regarding that switch. Valencia had developed rigid attacking instincts as a winger and some of his performances in the second half of van Gaal’s first season in charge suggested he did not possess the appropriate defensive mindset expected of a full-back.

The 2015-16 campaign was a difficult one for the Ecuador captain as a foot injury in the season’s first Manchester derby ruled him out of action for five months. All in all, Valencia made only fourteen league appearances although he did make van Gaal’s starting line-up for United’s FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. With Matteo Darmian in reserve for United, many felt Valencia would play second fiddle to the Italian, come the following season.
So far that thought has been well and truly disproved as Valencia now appears to be Jose Mourinho’s first choice at right-back for United. What’s more is that he has settled into the role better than ever before with a host of promising displays. Having assisted Zlatan Ibrahimović’s winner against Leicester City in the FA Community Shield, Valencia seems to have made that position his own and has improved leaps and bounds in the defensive department. His last ditch tackle to prevent Roberto Firmino from handing Liverpool an almost certain lead in Monday night’s goalless draw at Anfield stands testament to that.
The statistics back it up too. On an average this season, Valencia has made more blocks, clearances and lost fewer tackles as compared to his previous two campaigns in defence. From an attacking viewpoint, he has created more chances and looked a lot more menacing while overlapping his winger. He has also made sixteen tackles so far, a marginal downgrade on his tally two seasons ago but impressive nonetheless. Valencia not only does his duties well but thinks quicker and clearer as a right-back now under Mourinho. That may be attributed to the Portuguese boss’ tactical mindset, a case of which was on display against Liverpool in the Premier League.
Valencia is expected to be part of an unaltered back four in domestic competitions at least. While Darmian and academy product Timothy Fosu-Mensah have replaced him in the club’s three Europa League games thus far, his assured position in the Premier League ought to render him unfazed. The transition from a blistering winger to a more cautious full-back is now complete and a lot remains to be seen whether he can cement his place as one of the division’s best.

Manchester United defender Valencia has a big challenge to top this Mourinho list

Man Utd's right back Antonio Valencia still has a temporary tag but can he continue to rise to the test for the Man Utd boss?

Ander Herrera raised a few eyebrows when he described Antonio Valencia as “the best right-back in the world.”
United's Spanish midfielder put his team-mate on a par with Juventus's Dani Alves.
High praise indeed for the Reds' Ecuadorian. And even if the tribute is a bit lavish, the wayJose Mourinho's early team selections have been panning out this season it appears that Valencia is very much flavour of the month.
Considering the 31-year-old was a favourite candidate to be part of a Mourinho clear out when the new United boss arrived at Old Trafford his starting place in United's opening two Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Southampton has almost been as much as a surprise as Herrera's praise.
He has been preferred over specialist full back Matteo Darmian. Even though the Italian didn't have a great debut campaign at United last season it has been a shock that he's fallen behind Valencia, who has always been pigeon-holed as an 'emergency' right back.
Valencia is currently winning the battle but in the background is United's interest in signing Monaco right back Fabinho.
The 22-year-old six-foot plus defender is a natural in the role and a £25m move to Old Trafford before next Wednesday's closing of the summer transfer window cannot be ruled out.

It would put pressure on the resilient Valencia who also knows he's battling some big names from Mourinho's past when being judged on his long-term qualities.
The United boss has had some top drawer full backs in his teams.
Back in 2002 Mourinho signed Paulo Ferreira from Vitoria Setubal for Porto and converted the Portuguese player from a midfielder into a right back. He followed Mourinho to Chelsea and became a Stamford Bridge stalwart in the role.
At Inter Mourinho came into contact with the club's all time number one appearance maker Javier Zanetti.
“I know players who are old at 22, and guys who are young at 37. Zanetti was already 37 when I was at Inter, but when the other players came in after a day off from training, he would run all the way from his home to burn off more energy,” Mourinho once recalled.
It was Zanetti's boundless energy that made him a hit in a Mourinho XI and bodes well for hard worker Valencia.
Mourinho found another role at Inter for Zanetti to accommodate Brazilian Maicon who became his double Serie A and Champions League winning right back in the United manager's two seasons at the Italian club.
Ferreira, Zanetti and Maicon's are big influential boots for Valencia to fill in Mourinho's eyes, and then there is the potential threat of Fabinho, but for a man who overcame a horrific leg break the challenge won't faze him.

European giants launch stunning £26m raid on Manchester United

PARIS ST-GERMAIN want to sign Antonio Valencia from Manchester United, according to reports in Spain.

Futbol Mercado claim the French champions have made a £26m bid for the 30-year-old.
PSG are in the market for a new right-back following the sale of Gregory van der Wiel to Fenerbahce and with doubts surrounding the future of Marquinhos at the Parc des Princes.
Valencia joined United in 2009 from Wigan for a fee in the region of £16m.
He was initially signed as a winger but was converted into a right-back by Louis van Gaal during the Dutchman's first season in charge at Old Trafford.
The Ecuador international has been dogged by injuries in recent seasons and was limited to just 22 appearances for United last season.
He has been linked with a move away from the Red Devils following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager.
Last month, Spanish newspaper El Confidencial claimed he was one of 12 players whose futures were uncertain while Turkish giants Galatasaray were reported to be interested in him.

Ecuador hold their Copa fate in their own hands

A victory by at least a two-goal margin against Haiti will see La Tricolor clinch the quarter-finals spot, regardless of what happens in a match between Brazil and Peru.

A narrow win could also see Ecuador go through if the other match ends up in Brazil’s or Peru’s favor for that matter.
However, it is not likely La Tricolor will rely on anyone doing them a favor and will look to secure a peaceful end to the match against Haiti. They were heavily tipped for quarter-finals prior to the tournament, but with two consecutive draws, against Brazil (0-0) and Peru (2-2) they find themselves in a nervous finish to the group stage. After two somewhat disappointing performances in the first two rounds, we can certainly expect something special from Ecuador, especially from their forward line that features Premier League stars Antonio Valencia, Jefferson Montero and Enner Valencia.
As for Haiti, they are already out of the tournament with no points on their account so far. A look at their goal difference (1:8) is especially ugly, Brazil doing the most damage beating them 7:1 in the last round. They opened the tournament with a narrow defeat to Peru  which finished third in the last two Copa’s and it came a surprise they were torn to pieces by Brazil. The Caribbean side now has to play for its pride and win the first point of the tournament, and possibly knock out Ecuador.

Head to Head

These two teams faced each other fives times. Four of those matches were friendlies while only one was a competitive match – CONCACAF Gold Cup. Surprisingly, Haiti boast a better record with three wins to Ecuador’s two, including a 2-0 win in the aforementioned Gold Cup (2002).

Match facts

  • Haiti are in a dreadfull run of form as they lost four consecutive matches.
  • Ecuador have scored at least two goals in three of their last four matches.
  • Ecuador have never beaten Haiti in a competitive match.

Team news

Having been sent off against Peru, Gabriel Achiller will have to sit this one out for Ecuador. Miller Bolanos is a doubt and his fitness will be assessed just before the match.
Max Hilaire has overcome his injury and is pushing for a start for Haiti. Coach Patrice Neveu has no other injury or suspension worries.
Predicted lineups:
Ecuador: Dominguez; Paredes, Mina, Erazo, Ayovi; Gruezo, Noboa; A. Valencia, Bolaños, Montero; E. Valencia
Haiti: Placide; Goreux, Genevois, Jerome, Jaggy; Alexandre; Alcenat, Marcelin, Lafrance, Louis; Belfort.

Antonio Valencia ready for Man United’s end of season awards

Antonio Valencia ready for Man United’s end of season awards
Antonio Valencia is suited and booted for Manchester United’s end of season awards ceremony at Old Trafford tonight.
Fresh off the back of being named Man United’s man of the match for his performance against Leicester at the weekend, Valencia will be going to the awards in good spirits.
Due to injuries this season, Valencia has made less than 20 appearances and won’t be taking centre stage like he did back in 2012 after winning goal of the season for his cracker away at Blackburn Rovers.
David de Gea is widely considered the favourite to be named United’s player of the season but Chris Smalling, Anthony Martial and Daley Blind all deserve to be given some credit as well.
As for Valencia, it’s probably a good thing he isn’t going to win any awards tonight anyway – judging by how tight that shirt is, he might not be able to lift his arms.

Skrtel and Valencia make injury comebacks in Under-21 tie

The clubs renewed rivalries at youth level, with first-team players for both clubs making injury comebacks.
Skrtel and Valencia make injury comebacks in Under-21 tie

Martin Skrtel and Antonio Valencia made returns to action from respective hamstring and foot injuries as Liverpool and Manchester United's Under-21 sides met on Friday.
Winger Valencia had been out of action since October's 0-0 derby draw with Manchester City, while Skrtel was returning to the pitch for the first time since the Reds' 3-0 defeat at Watford in December.
Skrtel got through an hour at Prenton Park while Valencia was withdrawn at the interval, replaced by recent senior debutant Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
First-teamers were on display for either side as Adnan Januzaj, Steven Caulker and Jordon Ibe all featured.
The game finished 1-1 after United youth captain James Weir - another player to make his first-team bow in recent weeks - cancelled out Jerome Sinclair's opener.
